Teacher Training At Eckington School

Eckington School has an excellent reputation for Initial Teacher Training (ITT). In 1995 the school had its first ever trainees, Jo England and Rachel Empson, aspiring English teachers. Since then, ITT has gone from strength to strength with the following departments taking trainees: PE, Maths, Science, Technology, MFL and English.

We work in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, providing the highest quality provision for future members of our profession.

2012 saw new developments in ITT with partnerships with Westfield Sports College in Science and Tupton Hall School in Maths.

We provide an excellent induction programme for our trainees, in conjunction with the NQT induction programme, led by experienced and senior colleagues. Details of this will soon be available on the website.

Frequently Asked Questions for Parents/Carers

  • Will my child's results suffer if they are taught by a trainee?
Not at all, the host teacher of the class is still 100% responsible for the pupils progress, achievement and attainment. The trainees are only left alone with the pupils once the host teacher and the subject mentor are confident that the trainee is ready to teach on their own. The host teacher is always within easy access to the classroom if any concerns arise.

  • What subjects are taught by the trainees?
Currently we train English, Maths, Science, D&T and PE.

  • Will my child be taught by a trainee in more than one subject?
All subject mentors meet with each other on a regular basis to ensure that pupils dont have an excessive amount of lessons with trainees.

  • Do the trainees have the qualifications to teach the subject?
The trainees have a first degree in the subject that they will be teaching and will have attended an interview at the partnership Universities. All trainees are CRB checked before coming into school.

  • How are the trainees managed?
The trainees have a subject mentor who formulates their timetable and offers specific subject support. The trainees also receive regular visits from their University tutors. The ITT Coordinator and the trainees meet on a weekly basis to discuss progress and various educational topics such as, G&T, Safeguarding, SEN, classroom management etc.
